A 32-year-old man was held without bail after a deadly crash in Chatham on Saturday.
Benjamin Shealey, wearing a neck brace, appeared in court Monday. He was arraigned on 10 charges including assault with a dangerous weapon and unlicensed operation.
Police said Benjamin Shealey led them on a two-town chase that started in Harwich just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday. It came to a deadly end when officers say he struck and killed a pedestrian on Route 28 in Chatham and hit a parked car, injuring four others, including two children.
“The Range Rover that I guess was the car that was pursued had leapt off the road and landed on the cars across the street that were parked,” said Julie Dykens who heard the crash.
Benjamin Shealey hasn’t been charged with the death of the pedestrian, a 62-year-old Orleans man.
“He doesn’t even know there was a death or an accident,” said defense attorney Frank Shealey, who is also the suspect’s uncle. “I don’t know how he doesn’t know.”
Frank Shealey said the district attorney does plan on filing additional charges.
Benjamin Shealey is being held without bail until a dangerousness hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday.
