CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A New Hampshire prep school is defending the way it handled the case of a 15-year-old student who was kicked out after a sexual encounter with another student.
Lisa MacFarlane, principal of Phillips Exeter Academy, said Thursday the case was handled fairly and in accordance with school policies.
The student’s parents say in a lawsuit that school administrators first told them their son would be placed on leave in the spring semester, but could return this fall. They argue the school decided instead to withdraw the boy altogether amid pressure from criticism of the school over past sex abuse cases.
Phillips Exeter acknowledged Wednesday a school minister was placed on leave over allegations he mishandled several sexual assault cases. The Boston Globe first reported on the staff decision.
