Massachusetts is well known for its colleges, and several of them have been named among the safest college towns in the country.

According to the website LendEDU, towns with colleges were assessed based on the amount of violent and property crimes per population. The study used the FBI’s most recent crime statistics.

Wenham ranked as the third-safest college town in the country. Wenham, which hosts Gordon College, has a population of just over 5,100 and had 11 total crimes reported.

Franklin ranked as the No. 11 safest college community in the country. Franklin, which is home to Dean College, had one of the higher populations on the list at more than 32,000 but had just 110 reported crimes.

Other Massachusetts cities in the top 100 included Weston (No. 17), Bedford (No. 24), Norton (No. 25), Paxton (No. 27), Wellesley (No. 38), Needham (No. 39), Amherst (No. 68), Newton (No. 69), Longmeadow (No. 71), Dudley (No. 85), Milton (No. 88).

Several schools from New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and other parts of New England made the list as well.

The safest college town in the nation was listed as Malta, Illinois. The town has a population of just 1,154 people and had one crime incident reported.
