In their first debate, Republican Scott Brown missed no chance to call U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen a rubber stamp for the Obama administration, while she waited until the end to say her opponent doesn’t understand the New Hampshire economy.

Debating in North Conway on Monday, Shaheen repeatedly mentioned legislation she worked on with Republicans to counter Brown’s rubber-stamp charge. And in her closing statement, she highlighted bills Brown opposed as a Massachusetts senator that would have helped New Hampshire’s small businesses. She also accused him of voting to deny women access to contraceptives, prompting Brown to say he’s been fighting for women since he was 5, when his mother had an abusive husband.

Answering Shaheen’s barb about the economy, Brown touted his endorsement by the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
