BOSTON (WHDH) - A State Police trooper and four other people were injured early Saturday morning after a speeding car struck a cruiser in Boston.
The crash happened on Route 93 southbound near Exit 18 at around 2:45 a.m. after the trooper responded to a previous two-car crash at the same location. Police said the trooper was in his cruiser when it was struck by a 2014 Honda Accord with four people inside. All four people in the Accord suffered serious injuries and remain at Boston-area hospitals.
A preliminary investigation shows the Accord was speeding when it hit the cruiser, which was off to the far right side of the road with emergency lights on. According to another officer on the scene, the car swerved to its right, then entered the far right lane without slowing down, crashing into the rear of the police cruiser.
The impact pushed the cruiser into a MassDOT pickup truck. That driver was not injured. The cruiser then spun across all four lanes of traffic and came to rest in the far left lane, facing the opposite direction.
The Accord involved in the crash then veered off and struck another Honda Accord, driven by a 55-year-old Boston woman. That woman was not injured.
Several victims, including the trooper, were unconscious after the crash. The trooper was transported to Mass General Hospital with a concussion and a head laceration. The injured trooper, a 37-year-old man assigned to Troop E, was released from the hospital Saturday.
The driver and front seat passenger of the Accord were rescued from their car by emergency crews and were taken to Tufts Medical Center. The driver remains hospitalized at Tufts with serious, extensive injuries. The two backseat passengers of that car were transported to Boston Medical Center.
The driver is a 24-year-old man from Everett and he had two passengers, also from Everett, ages 27 and 29. Their names have yet to be released. There is no information yet on the fourth occupant of the vehicle.
Preliminary reports suggest that none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts. State Police said charges are pending against the 24-year-old driver.
