Suspect in Orlando nightclub shooting identified

Pete Williams of NBC News reports the suspect in the Orlando nightclub shooting is Omar Mateen, born in New York in 1986.

Mateen’s current address in Port St. Lucie, FL.

Police say approximately 20 people were killed inside Orlando’s Pulse nightclub, and at least 42 were wounded.

President Barack Obama has been briefed by his homeland security and counterterrorism adviser about the shooting.

The White House says Obama has been briefed and has asked for regular updates as the FBI and other federal officials work with Orlando police on the case.

Press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement that the president has directed federal officials to provide “any necessary assistance to pursue the investigation and support the community.”
