Rajon Rondo is getting closer to returning to the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics sent their All-Star point guard to the NBA Development League on Wednesday and then quickly recalled him. General manager Danny Ainge said the plan was for a “brief assignment” so that he could work out with the Maine Red Claws.

Rondo has been out nearly a year since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Jan. 25.

He has been hinting that he would like to return by Friday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
