PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Three schools were placed on temporary lockdown and a student was taken into police custody after he threatened violence in Maine’s largest city.

It is believed the weapon he showed to another student was a pellet gun.

Police in Portland say a student at an elementary school reported another student revealed a gun tucked in his waistband on Friday and threatened to use it. The school was placed into lockdown along with a nearby middle school and high school.

Police say they identified the teenager who made the threat as a 13-year-old middle school student. He was taken into custody in a nearby cemetery about an hour after the threat. Police say a pellet gun was found in the area and is believed to be the weapon the student displayed.

The student wasn’t named by police because of his age.
