BOSTON (WHDH) - The Boston Police Department celebrated the annual National Night Out Tuesday by bringing their newest police car to the celebration.

National Night Out was created to build trust between communities and police departments and build relationships. This year’s National Night Out comes at a time when strong positive and negative attitudes about police officers are being seen across the country.

“Once you accept issues did happen, then you can come together on common ground and know that for each other, we have empathy, sympathy and respect,” said Boston Police Chief William Gross.

In Boston, the police department’s new ice cream truck made stops at events all throughout the city. At events in Dorchester and Roxbury, officers handed out cups of ice cream to children.
