BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts residents who play daily fantasy sports can rest easy. The online contests are now permanently legal in the state.
Language contained within the state budget recently signed into law by Republican Gov. Charlie Baker eliminates a so-called “sunset” provision that threatened to make daily fantasy sports illegal after Tuesday.
Back in 2016, the Legislature added the July 31 sunset clause to allow it time to come up with permanent regulations and a system for taxing daily fantasy sports. Those new regulations and taxes have yet to materialize, however.
Jason Robbins, chief executive of Boston-based DraftKings, says repeal of the sunset provision provides “certainty” for the company, while sending a “strong signal” to other sports-tech companies.
Robbins says DraftKings is planning a major expansion that will result in additional hiring.
