HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Top political leaders in Connecticut are set to receive an update on election security.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill will receive a briefing Monday from elections security experts on how to protect the country’s election system ahead of primary elections throughout the state.
Blumenthal said that while Russian hackers were unsuccessful in accessing Connecticut’s systems in past elections there are significant concerns that remain ahead of the 2019 municipal and 2020 presidential election cycles.
The two Democrats will receive the briefing at the Legislative Office Building.
Blumenthal has pushed to make it a federal crime to hack any voting system used in a federal election and to require that any attempts by a foreign agent to interfere in an election be reported.
