The man who authorities say was driving the car that struck and killed a State Police trooper on Wednesday remains in the intensive care unit at a hospital, according to the man’s family.

The family of 30-year-old David Njuguna, said he has a concussion, two broken ribs and a deep cut on his leg. Njuguna’s family says he is recovering at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

Police say Njuguna was driving the car that hit and killed Trooper Thomas Clardy on Wednesday as he was processing a traffic stop inside his cruiser on the Mass Pike in Charlton.

Police have charged Njuguna with negligent operation of a car and failure to stay in marked lanes. Authorities have revoked Njuguna’s license saying he poses an immediate safety threat.

Police say that for unknown reasons, Njuguna’s car crossed three lanes of traffic, without slowing and struck Clardy’s cruiser. Witnesses told police Njuguna’s car was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Police are investigating the crash.

In a statement, Njuguna’s family said they are:

“Devastated by the death of the dedicated trooper and proud father who lost his life in the effort of making all of us safe. His family is in our prayers.”
