SALEM, N.H. (WHDH) - A serious crash shut down part of Interstate 93 in Salem, New Hampshire, on Monday night as Memorial Day travelers returned home after the long weekend.

Troopers responding to the southbound side of the highway were forced to close all travel lanes due to the severity of the crash, according to New Hampshire State Police.

Video from the scene showed troopers examining a damaged blue sedan that was later loaded onto a tow truck.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital. There was no word on their condition.

Two people in a separate vehicle suffered minor injuries.

A photo shared on Twitter by one motorist showed standstill traffic that was backed up for miles.

The crash was cleared after about an hour. Some people could be seen sitting outside of their vehicles as they waited for the highway to be reopened.

No additional details were immediately available.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
