NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — Investigators believe the two people found dead in a Massachusetts apartment died from a murder-suicide.
The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office has identified the victims found Thursday at Hilltop Apartments West in Northampton as 24-year-old Karina Nieves and 26-year-old Nelson Cardona.
While the official cause of death still needs to be determined, the prosecutors say both people appear to have died from gunshot wounds. They say preliminary indications from the ongoing police investigation suggest Cardona likely shot Nieves before shooting himself.
Authorities say the couple have been in a long-term relationship and had three children together. All are reported to be safe and cared for.
Upstairs neighbor Francesca Piantedosi tells the Daily Hampshire Gazette she had spoken with the couple and they “seemed pleasant.” She says she never heard any fighting.
