The Mass. Department of Transportation approved a free fare day for cash customers and a 15 percent discount for monthly passholders.
On April 24, the free fare day will apply for all cash customers of the MBTA across all modes of transportation.
All monthly passholders will receive a 15 percent discount for all transportation modes during May.
This plan is estimated to cost $5 million, but the MBTA believes it will make up the cost with insurance claims.
