FREEDOM, NH (WHDH) — New Hampshire state police are investigating a fatal car crash that occurred in Freedom Wednesday night.

According to state police, officers from the Freedom Police Department responded to a car crash on Eaton Road off of New Hampshire Route 153 around 11:00 p.m.

When officers arrived, they determined one driver had died on the scene and the other driver fled the scene.

While awaiting the arrival of the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit, officers, troopers and deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and the New Hampshire state police began looking for the other driver.

A K-9 conducted an extensive search and was unable to find the driver.

Preliminary investigations showed a pickup truck was driving southbound on NH Route 153 when it crossed the center line and hit a car traveling northbound head on.

The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene on foot. The driver of the other car, 46-year-old James Monroe of Cornish, Maine was pronounced dead on the scene.

A short time after clearing the scene, the owner of the pickup truck was found walking along NH Route 153 in the area of the crash. He had visible injuries and was detained at the scene.

Police identified the man as 63-year-old David Clancy of Freedom, New Hampshire.

Clancy was arrested and charged with one felony count of conduct after an accident. He was released on bail and will be arraigned at 8:00 a.m.  in the 3rd Circuit Court—Ossipee on September 1.
