A man stuck under a tree for hours was rescued late Saturday afternoon, thanks to a group of nuns who heard his cries for help.

Firefighters said the 74-year-old man had been chopping wood when a tree fell on him, trapping him underneath. The situation only grew more dire as the sun started to set and the temperature dropped.

Two hours after getting trapped, a group of sisters from Mount St. Mary’s Abbey happened to be walking in the woods before prayer when they heard him yelling for help. The nuns were unable to lift the tree themselves but they called 911 and led rescuers through the woods to the man. He was eventually freed and taken to the hospital.

"How lucky was he to have someone like that looking over him," said Wrentham Fire Capt. Bob Harrison.
