WINTHROP, MASS. (WHDH) - A man is facing assault charges after allegedly pointing a replica of a gun at people before Winthrop’s Independence Day parade Saturday, officials said Tuesday.
Officers responding to reports of a man with a gun on Revere Street were told a man sitting on a military vehicle in a parking lot was pointing a replica of an assault weapon at passing cars, the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office said. Two people allegedly heard the man say “head shot, boom” as he pointed the replica gun at them, according to the DA’s office.
Richard Duval, who owns Duval Auto Repair, said the man had given him a tow back to his auto shop earlier that day when Duval’s car ran out of gas. Duval, a Vietnam veteran, stores several military vehicles out front and had a replica Tommy gun in one of them — and he said the man grabbed the gun and got on top of one of the vehicles.
“The damn fool kid is up there pretending he’s shooting people on the sidewalk. So we both yelled at him – ‘Come on, knock it off, what are you doing?'” Duval said.
Police allegedly found the fake gun in the military vehicle and arrested Gregory Gill, 23, of Winthrop on two charges of assault with a dangerous weapon. Gill was arraigned Tuesday and ordered to be placed under house arrest and not have any contact with the victims.
