ANSONIA, Conn. (AP) — A man who police say was armed with a knife was shot to death Thursday inside the home of his estranged girlfriend after rushing at officers, police said.
Ansonia police Chief Andrew Cora said the man, whose name was not immediately released, was the subject of a protective order and had been barred from the home after a Nov. 16 arrest on a domestic violence charge.
Police said police went to the home at about 8 p.m. Thursday night after being contacted by the girlfriend.
Three officers tried to “verbally de-escalate” the situation, but the man refused to drop his weapon, Cota said. They then tried to subdue him with a stun guy, but the weapon had no effect, Cota said.
He was shot while running toward the officers with the knife in his hand, Cota said. He died at Griffin Hospital in Derby.
The Office of Chief State’s Attorney has assigned Danbury State’s Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III to investigate the officers’ use of force.
