Police are investigating two unrelated murders that happened within hours of each other in Taunton on Monday.

According to police, they received a 911 call around 5:47 p.m. on Monday, March 14 from a woman who said she came home from work to find her girlfriend dead inside their apartment.

The victim has been identified as Vanessa Courtney, 23.

Further investigation shows Courtney appears to have been stabbed or slashed to death.

Investigators were seen coming and going from the home throughout the day on Tuesday.

A makeshift memorial has grown outside the home.

Hours later, a man was found shot to death Monday evening at the Chateau Estates in Taunton.

Police said the body of Dominique Scott, 23, was found inside an apartment on Hart Street at around 8:30 p.m.

According to a preliminary investigation, the resident, identified as 24-year-old Nicholas Hoard, opened his apartment door after hearing knocking.

When he opened the door, two masked and armed men forced themselves inside, one holding Hoard at gunpoint while the other rummaged through his apartment.

Hoard was able to disarm the suspect holding him in a headlock.

According to the investigation, the suspect rummaging the apartment returned to where Hoard was being held due to the commotion of fighting. Hoard shot and killed the suspect, later identified as Dominique Scott. The second suspect reportedly fled the apartment on foot.

Hoard is being questioned by police and prosecutors. Police are still searching for the other home invasion suspect.

No arrests have been made, and Hoard does not face any criminal charges in relation to the incident at this time.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
