LOWELL, MASS. (WHDH) - A Lowell man was charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly dragged a pit bull with his van.

Police said officers received several calls about a dog being dragged next to a van on Hildreth Street Sunday. According to police, the owner tied up the 2-year-old dog and forgot it was outside the van when he left Hovey Park and drove away.

Witnesses said the dog was initially running alongside the van, but could not keep up once the van increased its speed.

The dog suffered severe injuries to its paws, legs and stomach. It was taken to Wignall Animal Hospital where it had emergency surgery and continues to be treated.

Police charged 60-year-old Timothy Nicholas of Lowell with cruelty to animals. Nicholas will be arraigned in Lowell District Court July 14.
