PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police seized a sixth tractor-trailer from a trucking company accused of amassing $75,000 in unpaid tolls, officials confirmed Monday.
Commodity Haulers Express, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, is facing felony theft-of-service charges over the unpaid Maine Turnpike tolls over the past three years, state police said.
State police said they initially seized five tractor-trailers from the company on Friday. The sixth truck was seized later that day.
The trucks were towed to Copp Motors in Cumberland where they will remain until the bills are paid, officials said.
A message left at Commodity Haulers Express was not immediately returned.
The trucking company hauls water for Maine’s Poland Spring, which was not aware of the unpaid tolls, officials said.
The Maine Turnpike Authority asked state police last month to investigate after repeatedly notifying the company of the debt. The company’s right to operate vehicles in the state was suspended by the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
State police stopped one of the trucks on the Maine Turnpike in York and the other five in Poland.
