WASHINGTON (AP) — A new poll shows that most white Americans disapprove of athletes protesting during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Some athletes have been refusing to stand during the national anthem as a protest of the treatment of blacks by police.
The poll by Quinnipiac University shows that white Americans of all ages disapprove of the protests by a margin of 63 percent to 30 percent.
Hispanic Americans disapprove of the protests by a smaller margin, 45 percent to 36 percent.
Black Americans of all ages approve of the protests by wide margins, 74 percent to 17 percent.
Overall, more than half of Americans — 54 percent — disapprove of the protests while 38 percent approve.
