PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A retired Roman Catholic bishop and military chaplain has died in Rhode Island.

The Diocese of Providence says Bishop Francis X. Roque died Thursday at the Jeanne Jugan Residence Home in Pawtucket. He was 90.

Roque was born in Providence and served as a pastor at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence. He later served as a U.S. Army chaplain in Vietnam, Korea, Germany and Fort Devens, Massachusetts and attained the rank of colonel. He was ordained a bishop in 1983 and retired in 2004.

Bishop of Providence Thomas Tobin said Roque served his church and his nation “with great distinction.”

Roque’s funeral mass will take place Sept. 19 at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. He’ll be buried at St. Ann Cemetery in Cranston.
