Police say a Massachusetts man was rescued after his canoe capsized on a Maine river.

Fryeburg Police Chief Joshua Potvin says a 55-year-old Rockland, Massachusetts man flipped his canoe over Sunday afternoon on the Saco River in an area known as Walker's Rips.

Crews were called to the scene after receiving a 911 call of a canoer in distress. Witnesses told police that the man was paddling his canoe when it tipped over. He went under water and hit his head and knee on the rocks before other canoeists brought him to the shore.

Potvin says the canoeist had a life jacket in the boat but wasn't wearing it when the canoe capsized.

He says the victim is in stable condition at Bridgton Hospital. Authorities didn't immediately identify him.
