BOSTON (WHDH) - Shoebert the seal has made his return to the ocean.

The seal drew crowds of fans when he took up residence in Shoe Pond in Beverly earlier this month.

Shoebert was released back into the waters off Block Island by the Mystic Aquarium Rescue Clinic Tuesday.

Shoebert’s stay in Shoe Pond ended when he was transported to the Mystic Aquarium. Rescuers from Beverly Animal Control, the fire department and marine animal experts struggled to corral him for several days before Shoebert waddled to the Beverly Police Station last week and “turned himself in.” Once he was there, experts were able to crate him without too much effort.

A mural next to Shoe Pond in Beverly is being planned to commemorate Shoebert’s stay.

Shoebert is wearing a satellite tag to track his location when he returns to the wild.
