PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A self-driving shuttle service is launching in Providence.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo and state Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti say the “Little Roady” autonomous vehicle pilot program is scheduled to begin May 15. It’s the first service of its kind in the state.
The free service will operate seven days a week, with 12 stops between Olneyville Square and Providence Station. There’s no public transit along the full route.
Each vehicle holds six people, including an attendant who has the ability to take control at any time to ensure safety.
May Mobility of Ann Arbor, Michigan, was awarded a contract by the state to operate the service. The state will pay $800,000 for the first year.
The contract includes options to extend the service for two more years.
