WESTON, MASS. (WHDH) - The days of physically handing over money at a toll booth on the Mass Pike are over.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation officially started the switch over to all-electronic tolling on the Mass Pike on Friday night. As the new system is implemented, MassDOT is warning drivers about possible delays because of changes in traffic patterns.
To help people prepare, E-ZPass customer service centers will have extended service hours throughout the weekend.
The new tolling system will be cheaper for people with transponders but there will be a six-month grace period for those without.
Drivers without transponders will get a bill in the mail based off their license plate. That bill will include an application for a transponder. Drivers who apply and get one will be credited with a discounted rate.
The transponders themselves are free but it costs $20 to set up an account and start paying tolls.
Customers can get the transponders at seven service centers across the Mass Pike and at RMV locations.
