An Upton police officer saved a family early Saturday morning after their house caught fire.

According to the Upton Police Department, Officer Matthew Rankin was out on patrol when he saw heavy smoke and fire emerging from the garage of a home. Police said Rankin knocked on the front door and woke up the family inside to alert them.

"There was a police officer and as soon as we opened the door, he was like, your garage is on fire, you gotta get out of the house," said homeowner Julie Crawley.

Crawley and the rest of her family, including her son and five dogs, all got out of the house safely.

"We didn’t really see anything until we got into the driveway and saw smoke and flames," said Crawley.

Police said most of the damage was contained to the garage.
