SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) — An Air Force colonel who served as vice commander of the 20th Fighter Wing until he was demoted in February has been charged with possessing child pornography and obstructing justice.

The Air Force said in a news release Monday that Col. William R. Jones faces a preliminary hearing on Aug. 8.

Jones, a command pilot and instructor with more than 2,000 flying hours, was reassigned in February to a desk job — deputy chief of safety for the Ninth Air Force headquarters at Shaw Air Force Base. Col. Stephen Jost said then that he had lost confidence in his deputy.

It was not known if he has an attorney yet.
