WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Worcester man from the African nation of Burundi says the drowning of his 10-year-old son in a pond has devastated his family, adding they can't even figure out how to begin making funeral arrangements and cannot even afford a funeral.

Jean-Claude Nsengiyumva says emergency workers recovered the body of David Ndayishimiye on Saturday. He says the third grader drowned in Bell Pond on Friday while swimming with others.

He says the boy did not know how to swim and that chilly waters in the pond likely sapped his strength. He says a medical examiner is conducting an autopsy.

District Fire Chief Kevin Maloney says the boy was about 50 feet offshore in 8 to 10 feet of water.
