Gulnaz Gubaydullina breaks modern pentathlon Olympic record in 200m freestyle

After struggling in the fencing ranking round yesterday, Russia’s Gulnaz Gubaydullina had a strong performance in the 200m freestyle. She finished her heat with a time of 2:07.94, the fastest of the day, earning 317 points.

Gubaydullina’s time broke the Olympic record time of 2:08.11 previously set by Hungary’s Sarolta Kovacs in 2012. Kovacs, who was in the same heat as Gubaydullina, finished third overall with a time of 2:09.02 and 313 points.

France’s Elodie Clouvel finished in second with 315 points after completing her swim in 2:08.62.

American sisters Margaux and Isabella Isaksen finished 23rd and 24th respectively. Isabella competed in the first heat which she won with a time of 2:20.20. She led all swimmers until the end of the third heat when she was pushed down the leaderboard.

Margaux finished last in her heat but just edged out her sister as she finished with a time of 2:19.91.

Defending gold medalist Laura Asadauskaite and medal favorite Lena Schoneborn rounded out the top 29 with disappointing times of 2:21.01 for Asadauskaite and 2:21.74 for Schoneborn.

After finishing first in the fencing ranking round yesterday, Poland’s Oktawia Nowacka finished 16th, clocking in at 2:16.67.
