After subdivision 1 of 3 in the qualification round of men’s gymnastics, reigning world all-around champion Kohei Uchimura of Japan led the all-around rankings despite a fall on high bar. His team found themselves in first place as well, edging out the host nation’s team, Brazil, by slightly over a point.
Four teams competed in subdivision 1, while the rest of the field was made of individual gymnasts whose countries didn’t not qualify a full Olympic team. The team standings are:
1. Japan: 269.294
2. Brazil: 268.078
3. Netherlands: 257.686
4. South Korea: 257.645
12 total teams will compete in qualifications, and only eight will advance to Monday’s all-around final. The U.S. men will compete in subdivision 2 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
The top five all-around rankings are:
1. Kohei Uchimura (Japan): 90.498
2. Ryohei Kato (Japan): 89.232
3. Sergio Sasaki (Brazil): 88.898
4. Arthur Mariano (Brazil): 88.465
5. Jossimar Orlando Calvo Moreno (Colombia): 87.506
The all-around silver medalist at the 2015 World Championships, Cuba’s Manrique Larduet, hoped to make a big impression in his first Olympics but wasn’t at his sharpest. He finished seventh and may not qualify for the 24-person all-around final.
