PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island police have found a decomposed body after searching a vehicle submerged in waters off the town of Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Deputy Police Chief Maj. Brian Peters said divers discovered the body on Thursday.

Police first began investigating near Brewers Marina after someone spotted oil on the water’s surface late on Wednesday. Fire department swimmers found a vehicle covered in silt that appeared to have been submerged for a long time. A state police dive team recovered the vehicle and the body on Thursday morning.

Police say the vehicle matches the description of one belonging to a 21-year-old from South Kingstown who’s been missing since February. Detectives are investigating.

The marina is located near where the Sakonnet River meets Mount Hope Bay.
