HOUSTON (WHDH) — Some doctors are now using dehydrated placenta tissue to help heal patients’ eye problems.

After birth, mothers have the option to donate their placenta for medical use. After meeting strict donor screenings, the placenta can be used in other ways. At Vision Source in Houston, Dr. Chike Mordi uses the tissue to heal eyes.

The membrane is held onto the patient’s eye with a contact lens and then dissolves. Mordi said the membrane can improve dry eye and abrasions.

“The membrane reduces scarring and it reduces inflammation also,” said Mordi. “And it helps the eye heal faster, it helps it regenerate.”
