A Marblehead couple is fighting a $16,000 water bill they say is inaccurate.
Barbara Schaye said she and her husband recently received a quarterly water bill for $16,222.37.
"That’s a joke, right?" Schaye said of the bill.
The Schayes say previous bills have been much lower.
The Schayes have paid the bill because they were told the water would be turned off. The couple is seeking reimbursement.
An investigation into the bill was launched.
Schaye says a plumber checked her home and found leaks but nothing that could have caused such a high bill.
"Plumbers were over here, checked the whole house out. There is nothing even close to what would have been that problem," said Schaye.
The town’s water & sewer superintendent says the town took her water meter to two labs for testing and they both determined the meter was accurate.
The bill indicated the Schayes used 900,000 gallons of water.
"It is a totally insane amount of water in the bill," Schaye said.
The couple believes a temporary glitch could have caused the high bill or nearby construction work.
The Schayes plan to continue fighting the bill.
