Marblehead Police have called off a search following a report of a suspicious man talking to children in the area.

According to the police department’s Facebook page, a white male in his 30’s was spotted near the Tower School, in the Colgate Road area, and police said the man was reportedly speaking to students at the school, asking for help looking for a lost dog.

But an update on the Marblehead Police Facebook page says the man in question saw the story on the news and called into the police station to identify himself.

After interviewing the man, the police have determined that the incident was a misunderstanding and there is no reason for the public to be alarmed.

The story originated when a teacher spotted the man talking to students and began approaching the man, who took off in the direction of Colgate Road toward Pleasant Street.
