EATONS NECK, N.Y. (WHDH) — A New York town honored a World War II veteran on his 90th birthday, July Fourth.

Roy Beach, 90, joined the Navy at age 17 and piloted a troop transport to the beaches of Normany on D-Day back in 1944. He later served in the Korean War and has been a volunteer firefighter for the past 63 years.

For their Fourth of July parade, the towns of Eatons Neck made Beach the grand marshal. During the parade, he stayed on the job as well, working the fire department’s radio during an emergency call.

“You know at my age, you can’t do a lot,” said Beach. “This gives me something I’m proud of.”
