The Rio 2016 tennis competition will wrap up on Sunday, which will see five medal matches across three divisions: Men’s singles, mixed doubles and women’s doubles.
In the men’s singles Gold Medal Match – the last match of the day – reigning singles gold medalist Andy Murray will try to break Juan Martin del Potro’s incredible winning streak.
On his way to the final, Argentina’s del Potro has defeated the likes of Serbia’s World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the opening round and Spain’s World No. 5 Rafael Nadal in an epic semifinal. He’ll now take on Great Britain’s Murray, a member of tennis’ “Big Four” and the winner of last month’s Wimbledon Championships.
After losing to del Potro in a three-set semifinal, Spain’s World No. 5 Rafael Nadal will fight for a singles medal in the Bronze Medal Match. His opponent, Japan’s Kei Nishikori, was a finalist at the 2014 US Open. Nadal won gold in singles at the 2008 Beijing Games and earned a second gold, this time in men’s doubles, on Friday.
Nadal will compete against Nishikori for singles bronze at approximately 1 PM ET on court 1.
Mixed doubles will feature an all-American final: the pair of Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram will compete against Jack Sock and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Though Williams has won four Olympic gold medals since Sydney 2000 (including three in women’s doubles alongside sister Serena), both Sock and Mattek-Sands have won doubles and mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.
That match will take place on Centre Court at approximately 1 PM ET.
35-year-old Martina Hingis – who turned pro in 1994, when she was just 14 – has won just about every tennis competition imaginable, with the exception of the Olympics. She’s taken home five singles Grand Slam titles across three tournaments (missing only the French Open) and completed the career Grand Slam in both doubles and mixed doubles.
Hingis will compete alongside her Swiss compatriot Timea Bacsinszky for doubles gold in the first match of the day. The Swiss duo will play Russia’s Makarova/Vesnina on Centre Court at approximately 11 AM ET.
