NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A homeowner at the end of Newport’s famous Cliff Walk is under fire for putting up a fence that the city and others say makes the walk into a narrow bottleneck.
Around 750,000 people per year visit the 3.5-mile walk between the Atlantic Ocean and mansions owned by members of America’s moneyed class.
The fence replaced an old rusted one, but the city’s Cliff Walk Commission says the new one was installed about 15 to 18 inches onto the walk, making it 5- to 7-feet wide in a section lined on both sides by a 6-foot-high chain-link fence.
The city, environmental advocates and locals want it removed.
The homeowner says the walk outside his fence is wider than other sections.
