The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Tuesday the first human case of West Nile virus in the state this year.

The patient is a resident of Middlesex County in her 70’s who was diagnosed through testing.

She remains hospitalized.

DPH is conducting an investigation to determine where the patient was most likely exposed to infected mosquitoes.

In 2015 there were 10 human cases of West Nile Virus in Massachusetts.

It is usually transmitted to humans through the bit of an infected mosquito.
