Authorities have recovered $1 million dollars in cash from a concealed safe and safe deposit boxes controlled by a former State Representative.

John George, who also served as a Dartmouth selectman, was previously convicted of embezzlement from a taxpayer-subsidized bus company that he controlled, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

George, who is 68 years old, was sentenced earlier this year to 70 months in prison for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

After George was sentenced, authorities got search warrants to find George’s assets they believed George was hiding, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Over the past two days, authorities found George’s safe deposit boxes at banks in Fairhaven and New Bedford. The boxes were filled with $100 bill and $50 bills.
