ATKINSON, N.H. (AP) — U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is heading to New Hampshire just after the Legislature killed a school choice bill championed by Republican Gov. Chris Sununu.
DeVos, an outspoken supporter of school choice, school vouchers and charter schools will headline the New Hampshire Republican Party’s annual spring fundraising dinner Monday at the Atkinson Country Club.
Her appearance comes days after the House killed a bill that would have parents to use state education money to send their children to private schools or for homeschooling.
Supporters said the bill would have empowered parents to determine which school best fits the needs of their children. Opponents argued that the bill siphons money from already cash-strapped public schools and sends it to private schools that can discriminate against children with disabilities.
