PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A college student out for a walk has died in a hit-and-run crash in Rhode Island, police say.

Brandon Ebert, 31, was struck by a vehicle at about 3:30 a.m. Monday while crossing a Providence street, Capt. Luis San Lucas said.

Ebert, a graduate student at Johnson & Wales University, was not carrying identification when officers found him with severe head trauma, San Lucas said.

He was identified with the help of college security and his housemates, who told police he liked to take late-night walks around the neighborhood.

Ebert was pursuing an MBA in hospitality, the university said in a statement.

“He took his studies seriously and was well-respected by his fellow students,” the statement said. “The university extends its condolences to his family.”

Witnesses told authorities that the vehicle that hit Ebert was a silver or tan four-door sedan.
