TOWNSEND, MASS. (WHDH) - Fire crews battled a massive, four-alarm blaze Monday night in Townsend.

Flames could be seen shooting out of windows of the 24-unit apartment building around 9 p.m.

The Townsend fire chief said the blaze started on the first floor and quickly spread.

A young girl told 7News about the terrifying moment when she and her grandmother escaped from the burning building.

“My grandma heard the alarm. We were like looking and then we heard someone scream, ‘fire, fire!’ and then we ran out,” she said. “The smoke was coming out right behind us.”

Officials say multiple firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and are doing OK.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for the roughly 31 people that were displaced.
