NEEDHAM, MASS. (WHDH) - Detours are now in effect on Rt. 128 as crews began demolition on the eastbound side of the Highland Avenue Bridge in Needham.

The new bridge has already been built and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is have the old bridge town down this weekend. Traffic is being diverted onto side roads.

Demolition on the eastbound side is expected to be finished by 3 p.m. Saturday. The westbound side will be taken down between 6 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Drivers are advised to find alternate routes while the demolition goes on but those who do have to use the road are told to plan ahead.

The entire demolition is expected to be complete in time for rush hour on Monday morning.

  • Highland Avenue Local Traffic
  • Northbound I-95 (Route 128) to Maintain Mainline Traffic
  • Highland Avenue East to I-95 Northbound
  • Needham Street (Becomes Highland Avenue) West to I-95
  • I-95 Northbound to Highland Avenue East or West
  • I-95 Southbound to Highland Avenue East

Detour Routes Associated with the Southbound Rt. 128 (I-95SB) Bridge Demolition:

  • Highland Avenue Local Traffic
  • Southbound I-95 (Route 128) to Maintain Mainline Traffic
  • Needham Street (Becomes Highland Avenue) East of I-95 to I-95
  • Highland Avenue West to I-95
  • I-95 Northbound exit to Highland Avenue West
