MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man has been arrested for allegedly damaging graves and taking grave markers from a Middletown cemetery.

Police say that Kendall Maloney, 32, faces three counts of breaking and entering, desecration of a grave and removal of markers from veterans’ graves.

Middletown Police Capt. Jason Ryan told WJAR-TV during a phone interview on Tuesday that Maloney was a former employee of the cemetery and was selling the statues to a scrapyard in Westport.

According to a police report, Maloney worked for Newport Memorial Park as a maintenance and grounds worker.

A voicemail seeking comment was left Wednesday with Maloney’s public defender.
