BOSTON (WHDH) - Police say a man has been arrested for assaulting a Boston Police officer and attempting to steal his weapon.

Authorities say an officer in Brighton responded to a report of a suspicious person in Brighton.

The suspect, Patrick Lowry, 45 of Belmont, was allegedly drinking alcohol and urinating in plain view of families outside a nearby skating rink on Soldiers Field Road.

The officer approached Lowry, who police say appeared to be homeless, and offered to drive him to a nearby shelter.

The suspect then threw the beer, striking the officer in the head, then lunged at the officer, kicking and punching the officer several times.

Police say the suspect tried to get the officer’s gun several times during the scuffle.

Witnesses called 9-1-1, and two witnesses also came to the aid of the officer.

Lowry was eventually restrained and transported to a nearby hospital before eventually being booked.

He will appear in Brighton District Court on assault and battery and other charges.

The officer was hospitalized with head, neck, and back injuries but has since been released.
