BOSTON (WHDH) - The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) announced 36 new case of monkeypox in adult men, the organization said in a statement Thursday.

The announcement brings the total number of cases identified in the state to 115.

The 36 new cases were diagnosed between July 21 and July 27.

Current data from CDC indicates that there have been 4,639 cases of monkeypox virus this year in US residents, including the first identified case in Massachusetts on May 18. No deaths have been reported.

According to the DPH, the number of healthcare providers and locations offering the monkeypox vaccine across the state has expanded to 13 as federal distribution of the JYNNEOS vaccine increased. The list of health care providers giving the vaccine is listed on the Commonwealth’s monkeypox vaccine website, as well as information and eligibility.

The DPH said that as of July 27, 4,303 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine have been administered in the Commonwealth. However, due to the limited national availability of the vaccine it’s accessibility in the state remains limited.

Early symptoms of monkeypox can include fever, headache, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. Dr. Shira Doron of Tufts Medical Center said monkeypox is not as severe as COVID-19, but could be hard to track.

There have been no deaths in the US or globally due to the infection and patients are said to recover in 2 to 4 weeks.
