BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker is no fan of President Donald Trump, but he’s stopping short of endorsing his impeachment and removal from office.
Asked about whether he supported Wednesday’s House impeachment votes, the Republican declined to say whether he backed the move.
“That’s the decision they made. I wish it had been a little more bipartisan but unfortunately we’re never going to get that out of this Washington,” Baker told WGBH News Thursday.
“That’s their call,” Baker said when pressed. “I wasn’t there.”
Baker said it’s now up to the Senate to create what he called “a fair trial.”
“It’s unfortunate that some of the Senate folks have already basically said what they’re going to do before the thing even starts, and that’s on both sides,” Baker said. “If you’re going to be a juror in one of these things the most important thing for you to do is to say nothing.”
Baker has said he opted not to cast a ballot in the 2016 presidential contest rather than vote for Trump.
He said he didn’t think Trump had the temperament for the job and nothing since has changed his mind.
Baker said he thought months ago that Trump’s phone call with the president of Ukraine should be investigated.
